It has undergone multiple changes, from being divided into three large apartments, then converted back to one large home. Currently, the Quapaw Quarter Association is assisting the caretaker with preventing further deterioration by placing multiple tarps on the roof after a large hole has caused significant water damage. This historic building's future is unknown and could soon follow the same fate as the Majestic Hotel if nothing is done soon. Because the building was originally built by the federal government and was only allowed to be used by Hot Springs under the lease agreement made in 1960 stipulating that the State of Arkansas could inhabit the building so long as it was used for hospital purposes of some kind. After its closure arguments about who actually owned the hospital now started to arise with neither the State nor the Government wanting to claim ownership leaving the building in limbo. Clay Farrar who has been leading talks of finding the correct owner so work on preservation can begin says the building would easily cost roughly $1,000,000 a year and believes this is why no one wants to claim ownership. W.R. Grace & Co. Zonolite Processing Plant - The former W.R. Grace & Co. “Zonolite” Vermiculite Expanding Plant in North Little Rock, Ar was built in 1953. This plant processed vermiculite that was shipped in from Libby, Montana. Zonolite is a highly toxic vermiculite insulation product mixed with asbestos that was produced from the 1940s until the 1990s. In the Spring semester of 2021, the University of Arkansas’ Fay Jones School of Architecture + Design decided to help bring attention to a number of “at risk” structures in Hot Springs Arkansas. It was an honor to work with the Dean of Interior Design, Carl Matthews to produce this video which showcases the studio class, the many talented students and plans of how they would repurpose 5 historic buildings in Downtown.
