As we travel through the Ozark Mountains, we come across a tall concrete structure on the edge of Beaver Lake - the remains of the once thriving resort town of Monte Ne. It's with a heavy heart that we hear that this historic site will soon be torn down, leaving us with nothing but memories and photographs of its rich past. While we are sad to see Monte Ne go, it's important to remember that its history will always be with us. Exploring this abandoned site has been a unique and fascinating experience, transporting us to a different time and place. It's no secret that my favorite town to cover is Hot Springs, and this school is a great example as to why. Just from the outside, you can see that it was built with such purpose and love of the craft. How did such a beautiful place become abandoned? Happy Feed Store (DEMOLISHED) - https://abandonedar.com/happy-feed-store/ The Happy Feed Store had no truly known origin. Those details are a bit foggy. However, Sanborn Maps all the way back to 1909 show the building in existence. (Whether 1909 was the first year for a Sanborn Map of Bald Knob or it existing before then on older maps, is unknown). It currently has a population of 357 people; an abandoned store in the middle of town is what made me stop and notice Havana. The store in question was the McBride store, opened in the 1920s by Wayne McBride after deciding the banking profession was not for him. The store was a family-oriented business from the beginning, and the town heavily depended on the store. During the depression years, the store stayed open, operating on credit. Open 12-14 hours a day, and one of the few stores in Havana, people were dependent on the store. With its family-like atmosphere, the store was packed with customers, passersby, and the town’s gossip. Savage Theater Opening on May 20, 1947, the Savage Theater was once the lifeline of Booneville, Arkansas. Through the decades, it has been passed down through several owners until the curtains closed in September 2011. The theater was originally owned by E.W. Savage and could seat 520 people and (offered viewers) one screen. It has undergone multiple changes, from being divided into three large apartments, then converted back to one large home. Currently, the Quapaw Quarter Association is assisting the caretaker with preventing further deterioration by placing multiple tarps on the roof after a large hole has caused significant water damage.
